CBS goes Under the Dome

US network CBS is steering away from traditional procedural dramas after teaming up with Steven Spielberg for an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Under the Dome.

The Eye network has gone straight to series with the serialised drama, commissioning 13 episodes to air in summer 2013.

It will be produced by CBS Television Studios and Spielberg’s Amblin Television (Smash, Falling Skies). King, Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider and Brian K Vaughan, who wrote the television adaptation, will exec produce.

Under the Dome tells the story of a small New England town that is suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The series will be distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution and worldwide by CBS Studios International.

This is the latest straight-to-series order from a US network in recent months, as broadcasters bypass the traditional pilot process. NBC has ordered a Michael J Fox comedy and one-hour dramas Hannibal, UK copro Dracula and pirate story Black Sails.

Cablenet A&E also went straight to series with Psycho prequel Bates Motel, while VoD platform Netflix commissioned two seasons of forthcoming drama House of Cards.
