CBS beams up more Star Trek

Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS All Access and Netflix

CBS in the US has ordered a second season of its recently launched Star Trek prequel for its VoD service All Access.

Ordered in 2015, Star Trek: Discovery launched last month and follows the crew of a spaceship on missions to discover new worlds and life forms.

The sci-fi drama is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout, Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment.

The first six episodes of the show’s first season are available to stream on CBS All Access in the US, with new episodes added on Sundays.

Star Trek: Discovery’s first run is airing in two chapters, with the final episode of chapter one due on November 12. The second chapter, featuring the remaining six episodes, will debut in January 2018.

Last year Netflix secured rights to stream the show outside of North America the day after its US broadcast, as well as acquiring the entire back catalogue of the Star Trek franchise.

Marc DeBevoise, president and chief operating officer at CBS Interactive, said the show’s first six episodes had “driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest.”

In August CBS said it would roll out All Access internationally, beginning with Canada next year.
