Cbeebies’ Topsy & Tim picked up the best preschool live-action award

CBeebies and its live-action drama Topsy & Tim came out on top at last night’s 21st Bafta Children’s Awards in London, which also saw animator Peter Western honoured.

The preschool public service channel beat its older sibling CBBC, Cartoon Network and educational VoD service TrueTube to win in the Channel of the Year category, while Topsy & Tim was victorious in the preschool live-action section.

Meanwhile, The Amazing World of Gumball, Sam & Mark’s Big Friday Wind-Up, Horrible Histories and We Bare Bears won in the animation, entertainment, comedy and international categories respectively.

Two productions focusing on the plight of refugees were also recognised, with CBBC’s The Boy on the Bicycle (My Life) winning in the factual category and TrueTube’s Refugee named best drama.

Sixteen South, the Belfast-based company behind Lily’s Driftwood Bay, triumphed as the winners of independent production company of the year.

Elsewhere, Hey Duggee beat its fellow CBeebies shows Clangers, Go Jetters and Sarah & Duck to win in the preschool animation category, while Zodiak Kids Studios’ Secret Life of Boys was named best interactive original.

The Amazing World of Gumball won two gongs at the awards

Disney XD’s Good as Goaled won best shortform and the team behind Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball received further recognition by being named best writers.

The evening ended with Peter Western, one of the UK’s leading animators and storyboard artists, receiving the Special Award for his outstanding contribution to children’s media.
