Cartoon Network smells Skunk Fu hit

London-based animation boutique Cake Distribution has licensed its animated comedy action series about a kung fu-fighting skunk to Cartoon Network Europe.

Skunk Fu! (left, 52×12′), produced by Irish animation house Cartoon Saloon, with Telegael and Cake Entertainment, for Ireland’s TG4 and Germany’s Super RTL, will now air across all of Cartoon Network’s EMEA channels.

The series, created by Aidan Harte for kids aged six to 12, follows Skunk, a western kid learning kung fu from a wise old Panda in China in order to battle with the evil Dragon and his army of ninja monkeys.

The agreement follows previous carriage deals with European broadcasters the BBC, Super RTL, Canal J, France 5, RTBF, SVT, NRK, S4C, TG4 and RaiSat. According to Cake, the new deal brings Skunk Fu! to parts of Europe where it had not yet found a foothold.

Edward Galton, MD of Cake Distribution, Cake Entertainment’s distribution arm, said the size of Skunk’s territory now puts the property in a good position to break out of TV and move on to other platforms.

“Cartoon Network shares our hopes and ambitions for the property and we look forward to working with them in taking the building of Skunk Fu!’s success story to their territories,” said Galton.

Cake’s other programming includes King Arthur’s Disasters, Edgar and Ellen, Loopdidoo, Tiny Planets and Total Drama Island.

Cartoon Network Europe’s parent Turner Broadcasting System Europe pipes channels into around 100 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Cartoon Network Europe has to-date aired series such as The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, The Cramp Twins and Dexter’s Laboratory.
