Pitching: Living with Dad

What is the biggest issue facing the animation industry?
The international animation landscape has changed significantly, especially with the Covid situation and new audience behaviours. With the multiplication of streaming platforms and mergers and the concentration of traditional broadcasters, content needs to be more creative and original. Audiences nowadays want attractive graphics and a great story to entertain them. This new situation is challenging for producers all over the world and is raising the bar for animation content.

What is the Production Audiovisual Department of Média-Participations doing in response to this?
As a leading animation producer, we are constantly researching to create the best IP, be that either totally original or coming from existing books like The Smurfs, Marsupilami or Living with Dad. We invest to attract the best talent and authors, and create our own tools to produce the best original content, knowing that we have a library of comic books and graphic novels to draw from.

Are physical animation studios essential or is working from home the future of the industry?
Talent will always need to meet up in physical animation studios. Everyone else is able to work remotely with all the technology that now exists, and I foresee a hybrid model being the way forward for the animation industry.

How do you feel about Disney’s decision to close many of its TV channels around the world?
It was very sudden and made us nervous initially, but the industry moves fast and that’s consigned to the history books now. Generally speaking, it reflects the worldwide change and adaptation the whole industry is going through.

Tell us about the project you are pitching at Cartoon Forum.
Living with Dad (52×11′) is a comedy series about living, being and doing together. It’s adapted from French author Nob’s comic book and centres on a dad with four daughters who have their own agency too. In a very atypical family model, gender equality is one of the strongest messages.
