Caracol preps Netflix witch drama

Netflix Mexican original Club de Cuervos

SVoD giant Netflix has ordered its second Colombian original, called Siempre Bruja, from local prodco Caracol Television.

Inspired by the novel Yo, Bruja by Isidora Chacon, the series follows a Colombian slave and witch from the 17th century who, with the help of a wizard, escapes being burned at the stake by travelling forwards in time to present-day Cartagena.

Dago García (Pedro el escamoso) is slated to exec produce the series, which is written by Ana Maria Parra (Cuando Vivas Conmigo). It will be directed by Liliana Bocanegra (La Esclava Blanca, Made in Cartagena, Celia) and Mateo Stivelberg (La Esclava Blanca, La Rectora).

The drama will debut on Netflix in 2019 and follows last month’s announcement of the streamer’s first Colombian original, an as-yet unnamed offering from Narcos producer Dynamo Productions.

Siempre Bruja joins a larger slate of original productions being filmed in Latin America for Netflix, including Ingobernable, Club de Cuervos, La Casa de las Flores, Edha, Narcos, Samantha!, O Mecanismo, O Matador, 3% and Coisa Mais Linda, among others.

Netflix has been ramping up its international commissions of late, including a French romcom from director Noémie Saglio and its first China-produced drama Day & Night.
