The Night Logan Woke Up is a five-parter that brings together production and distribution group StudioCanal, French broadcaster Canal+ and Montreal-based Quebecor Content. Production starts in March next year and the series will air as a Quebecor Content and Canal+ Creation Originale in 2022.

Javi Hernandez and Harry Grivakis of VVS Films brokered the deals on behalf of the filmmakers and will serve as executive producers. StudioCanal holds the international distribution rights.

The psychological thriller is being adapted from Michel Marc Bouchard’s theatre production of the same name. Dolan (I Killed My Mother, Tom at the Farm) will both write and direct the series, which he will also produce along with Nanoby’s Nancy Grant and Jasmyrh Lemoine.

Alongside Dolan and Julianne Côté, The Night Logan Woke Up will star actors from the 2019 theatre production, including Julie Le Breton, Magalie Lépine-Blondeau, Éric Bruneau and Patrick Hivon.

The producers described the series as “a poignant thriller that combines horror, humour, drama and suspense, based on the realities and tragedies of life.”

The story follows three inseparable teenage friends – a girl, her brother and another boy – whose friendship is shattered when one of the boys rapes the girl. The series catches up with the trio 30 years later.

“We are truly honoured to be able to offer our partners the very first drama series by Xavier Dolan, one of the world’s best modern filmmakers,” said Francoise Guyonnet, executive MD of TV series at StudioCanal. “Xavier Dolan tells deeply human stories with a unique voice and has an ability to create real relationships on screen.”
