Canada warms up Bake Off remake

A broadcaster in Canada is set to remake The Great British Bake Off following a deal with Sky Vision, the format’s distributor in North America.

The Great British Bake Off is now bound for Channel 4

CBC in Canada will air the show under the title The Great Canadian Baking Show (8×60′) later this fall.

The Canadian version of the culinary competition will start production this month with Toronto-based Proper Television in association with CBC and UK-based Love Productions.

The original UK series will also air on CBC this summer as The Great British Baking Show.

The show searches for the best amateur baker and puts 10 contestants through a series of challenging ‘bakes’ to test their skills.

The format, which originated on BBC2 and comes from Sky-owned Love Productions, has so far been licensed in 23 countries, including Brazil, Australia, France, Ireland and the US.

“The Great Canadian Baking Show will deliver a distinctly home-grown take on this global television phenomenon, which audiences just can’t get enough of,” said Jennifer Dettman, executive director of unscripted content at CBC.

Earlier this year UK commercial pubcaster Channel 4 confirmed that it will air a full season of The Great British Bake Off in 2017, having poached the format from the BBC last year.

BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) holds the rights to the format and the finished programme around the world, excluding North America, where Sky Vision distributes the show.
