Cake takes new Angry Birds to Annecy

Angry Birds started life as a game in 2009

Children’s entertainment company Cake will unveil its new Angry Birds series at next week’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.

Developed in partnership with Finnish game firm Rovio Entertainment and Toronto-based toon studio Yowza! Animation, the Cake production went into development last October.

Angry Birds began as a mobile app game that was developed by Rovio in 2009. It was later turned into an animated TV series called Angry Birds Toons, before The Angry Birds Movie was released in 2016.

The new 52×11′ series follows original characters Red, Chuck and Bomb as tween birds in their school years, as well as the original green Piggies. A cast of new characters will also feature.

The series marks the latest collaboration between Cake and Rovio, whose partnership gives Cake international distribution rights to Rovio’s existing library of non-dialogue shorts and sees the two collaborate on original content. In addition, the Angry Birds YouTube channel is managed through Cake’s Popcorn Digital.

Tom van Waveren, CEO and creative director at Cake, said: “We have had a lot of fun putting this project together. We are immensely proud of the outcome and are looking forward to sharing it with the industry and with our partners, who have already indicated strong interest in the series.”
