C4, Xbox back Swedish sci-fi remake

MIPTV: UK prodco Kudos Film & TV is set to adapt Swedish sci-fi drama Äkta Människor (Real Humans) under a cross-platform partnership.

The 8×60’ series, titled Humans, will be funded by UK broadcaster Channel 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment Studios.

The original show was produced by Matador Films and Swedish pubcaster SVT. The new version will premiere on both Channel 4 and on the Xbox platform in the US in 2015.

Piers Wenger, Channel 4’s head of drama, said the remake was the first coproduction commission to benefit from the broadcaster’s increased investment in drama, and reaffirmed its “commitment to ambitious, highly original drama series.”

Nancy Tellem, president of Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment Studios, said the deal underscored the company’s “commitment to programming premium TV series with global partners.” She cited original commissions such as the TV series based on the Halo game franchise, exec-produced by Steven Spielberg.

Shine-owned Kudos (The Hour, Utopia, Broadchurch), which is already behind the remake of Scandi drama The Bridge, as The Tunnel, for Anglo-French audiences, will make Humans in association with Matador Films.

Kudos’s hit series Broadchurch, meanwhile, is being remade for French audiences.

Humans is scripted by Brits Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks, Spooks: The Greater Good), with Jane Featherstone (Broadchurch, Utopia, The Hour) and Derek Wax (The Hour, Occupation, Lip Service) exec producing for Kudos, and Henrik Widman and Lars Lundström for Matador Films. Chris Fry (The Smoke) is producing.

Filming will begin in the UK this summer, with casting yet to be announced.

Shine International, which already distributes Real Humans internationally, will be selling the remake.
