C4 returns to The Returned

The UK’s Channel 4 has picked up rights to the second season of hit French-language drama The Returned.

The supernatural thriller, set in an Alpine village where residents’ deceased loved one start returning from the grave, is produced by Haut et Court TV for Canal+ in France.

A second 8×60’ season will start filming in early 2014 for broadcast later in the year and C4 has agreed a deal with distributor Zodiak Rights to air the show.

The final episode of the first season aired on C4 last night. It’s the first subtitled drama the channel has aired for more than 20 years and has attracted an average audience of 1.8 million viewers and a 7.1% audience share in its 21.00 slot.

The series was created by Fabrice Gobert and is based on the 2004 feature film Les Revenants by Robin Campillo. An English-language version is currently in development, while ABC in US is lining up a similarly-themed show called Resurrection.
