Olivia Coleman, who plays a detective in the series, won best actress while David Bradley won best supporting actor. The ITV show tells the story of a small seaside community that is thrust into the media spotlight when a child is murdered.

A second season has already been ordered by ITV while the original show has been sold to more than 100 territories around the world. It is also being remade in the US as Gracepoint for Fox and in France, for France 2.

Elsewhere US-based streaming service Netflix claimed its first ever Bafta win for best international series with Breaking Bad, which the VoD operator makes available in the UK.

Bafta changed the rules governing its awards in October last year to allow online shows to be considered.

Sean Harris took the best lead actor award for his role in Channel 4’s Southcliffe while the UK pubcaster’s The IT Crowd bagged two awards, with Katherine Parkinson and Richard Ayoade taking best performances in a comedy programme.
