Bridge scribe pens Netflix Swedish original

Global streaming giant Netflix has commissioned its first Swedish original drama from the head writer of The Bridge.

Camilla Ahlgren

Quicksand is based on the international best-selling novel of the same name and will be adapted for the screen by The Bridge head writer Camilla Ahlgren.

Local production company FLX (The Bonus Family) will produce the series, which is based on the book by Malin Persson Giolito.

The plot focuses on a mass shooting at a school in a wealthy Stokholm suburb and the student who is subsequently put on trial for murder.

Production will begin in 2018, overseen by Pontus Edgren, who said: ”Malin Persson Giolito’s novel Quicksand is an original, fresh and suspenseful drama that we believe will make a fantastic Netflix series. We asked one of Scandinavia’s most respected writers, Camilla Ahlgren, to work with us and she was equally thrilled.”

Persson Giolito, added “We have taken our time to build a team that we can trust to create a great adaptation. I’ve subscribed to Netflix since the second week it was possible to do so in Sweden, so it’s incredibly exciting that Quicksand is becoming a Netflix original series.”

The commission continues Netflix’s investment in European originals following the £100m (US$ 131.4m) outlay on UK series The Crown, its first French original Marseille and similar commissions in Germany.

Crime drama The Bridge was a Swedish-Danish coproduction at the height of the Scandi noir boom. It aired on SVT and DR in their respective countries and local versions were later produced in the US for FX and UK and France by Sky and Canal+ jointly.
