Bridge co-creator plots TV2 series

MIPCOM: Danish pubcaster TV2 has greenlit a crime drama from international coproduction partners and with The Bridge co-creator Nikolaj Scherfig onboard as head writer.

Based on the eponymous Dan Sommerdahl crime novel franchise by Anna Grue, the project’s partners include Denmark’s Nordisk Film Production and Germany’s NDF, together with global distributor and producer Dynamic Television (Madiba, Trapped, Z Nation), which has taken worldwide rights to the series.

Created as a family-oriented take on the Nordic noir genre, the series follows a detective who solves murder cases in a coastal town. The drama series goes into production in summer 2017 with two versions, 5×90’ and 10×45’, to be made available internationally.

Nikolaj Scherfig called Dan Sommerdahl the first in a line of projects offered to him with “something different to the classic Scandic Noir genre: a tight clean crime series reflecting on life outside urban cities understanding how modernity and social development affect life in the province.”

Dynamic Television’s VP of coproductions and acquisitions Jan Bennemann said there’s “huge demand right now for Scandinavian crime drama with a blue sky procedural element. Dan Sommerdahl expands upon this with a very likable main character and an overall lighter tone, making it an ideal fit for a wider audience throughout the international marketplace.”

Seven books out of a planned 12-part franchise have so far been published, and the agreement with the author includes expanding the property and its characters. “This set-up allows for multiple seasons, giving us the opportunity to establish a long-running format,” said NDF’s CEO Matthias Walther.
