Blue Planet II exec launches prodco

The creator and executive producer of the BBC’s Blue Planet II has set up a new wildlife TV production company in the UK city of Bristol.

James Honeyborne

Freeborne Media has been launched by James Honeyborne, who has overseen some 35 films during his time as an executive producer at the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol.

Honeyborne has formed the company with director Renée Godfrey, who trained as an anthropologist and joined the BBC to work on Bruce Parry’s series Tribe, followed by BBC/Discovery Channel series Human Planet.

Her recent credits include Enchanted Kingdom 3D for BBC Earth and both Wild Atlantic and Wild New Zealand for the BBC and National Geographic.

Honeyborne’s recent BBC work includes Big Blue Live, coproduced with PBS, and Wild New Zealand, with National Geographic. He was also the series producer of the BBC/Discovery Channel series Africa in 2013.

The pair said the new company will focus on creating powerful and impactful nature and science documentaries.

“It’s been an honour and a privilege to work at BBC Natural History Unit for so long, but after 25 years, it’s time for us to find new audiences and explore fresh creative challenges,” said Honeyborne.

“Today nature is facing unprecedented challenges and there’s a pressing need for many important and surprising stories to be told. Freeborne will showcase the wonders of nature and encourage the protection of the natural world through ground-breaking films,” added Godfrey.
