Block Out stacks up in Spain, Holland

Block Out originally aired in Thailand

Spanish pubcaster RTVE and Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS have both commissioned local adaptations of gameshow format Block Out.

Originally created by Nippon TV in Japan and Germany’s Red Arrow Studios, Block Out sees two teams of four players, each with their backs literally against a wall, battle it out in a variety of physical games, combining trivia, strategy and chance.

The walls behind the teams are built of blocks that fall out each time a wrong answer is given, forcing contestants into crazy positions to try to avoid being knocked into the pit below.

RTVE has commissioned a domestic adaptation of the show which will be produced by Endemol Shine Iberia-owned Gestmusic and is scheduled to air on its La 1 channel later this year.

AVROTROS has commissioned the format for the Netherlands, to be produced by Tin Can.

Red Arrow Studios International holds the format’s worldwide rights, excluding Asia, and secured the two deals.

Tim Gerhartz, senior VP of global sales at Red Arrow Studios International, said: “Light-hearted, feel-good entertainment shows that bring the whole family together have never been more important. With its fun combination of physical games and trivia, Block Out has all the components needed to entertain a broad family audience.”

Block Out debuted in Thailand and has since been sold to VTV in Vietnam and PT Cakrawala Andalas Televisi in Indonesia to air on ANTV.
