Black Tide comes in on Animal Planet

US cable network Animal Planet will air a documentary special about the environmental devastation caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Black Tide: Voices from the Gulf will air on July 28 at 21.00, featuring the stories of those affected by the worst offshore oil spill in US history.

In April 2010, the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform killed 11 workers and sent hundreds of millions of gallons of oil spewing into the ocean for weeks before the leak was finally capped.

The two-hour doc is produced by Radical Media and directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger, who spent a year in the region filming with residents, fishermen, oil workers, scientists and representatives from BP and the government.

Berlinger said: “When the mainstream media packed up and moved to the next disaster, it gave the world the false impression that everything was back to normal. As this special shows, the people of the Gulf still face enormous consequences from the spill.”

Jon Kamen, Robert Friedman and Justin Wilkes are executive producers for Radical, while Lisa Lucas is executive producer for Animal Planet.
