Studio 99 will produce content including documentaries and other non-fiction programmes, as well as acting as a creative agency for brand partners.

Beckham co-founded the studio with long-term manager David Gardner and Nicola Howson, strategic adviser to David Beckham Ventures, who will become Studio 99’s MD.

The British soccer icon’s latest venture follows similar moves by other sports stars, including basketball player LeBron James and US football quarterback Russell Wilson, who have also formed media companies.

Studio 99 has already agreed a development deal with media firm Uninterrupted, co-founded by James and Maverick Carter, through which the pair are coproducing a doc series about soon-to-be-launched US soccer expansion team Inter Miami CF, which Beckham co-owns.

“I have always enjoyed creating content of all kinds and working on set with creative people,” Beckham said in a statement.

“It’s amazing to see what guys that I admire so much, like LeBron and Maverick, have achieved. It’s inspired me to see what’s possible in my world. It’s just very cool to be working with friends and meeting so many new people who are doing great things and want create exciting new projects with us.”

The news was first reported by Variety.
