Be shifts into scripted with comedy-drama

Studio Tarara debuted last month on VTM in Belgium

Belgian format distributor Be-Entertainment is expanding into scripted programming for the first time, with two new dramas on its slate for MipTV next week.

Studio Tarara (8×45’) is the first scripted project from Shelter, the multiple Emmy-winning prodco behind unscripted formats Did You Get the Message?, What If? and the well-travelled Benidorm Bastards.

The series debuted last month on VTM in Belgium, where it garnered a 31.8% market share (18-44, live+7) and is one of the 10 titles selected for Canneseries next week.

The series goes behind the scenes at a 1990s TV comedy show, exploring issues such as drug and alcohol addiction, sexual misconduct and suicide.

Be-Entertainment will also be launching Gina & Chantal (10×50’), produced by prodco Sylvester for VTM in Belgium. The feel-good dramedy is about Gina, who is used to living the good life but whose husband ends up in a coma.

“Belgium is not just known for its strong creative formats but also for its scripted series,” said MD Gepke Nederlof, explaining the company’s scripted move.

“Studio Tarara is a smart and fresh way of bringing so many different genres together, which is clearly becoming something of a Belgian trademark. It combines drama and comedy with unexpected depth.”

Be-Entertainment is best known for unscripted and gameshow formats such as Greetings From 19XX, Telly Test, Comedy Clash and Did You Get the Message?

Former Talpa exec Nederlof launched the company with Belgian broadcaster Medialaan in 2017.
