BBCWW cooks up Bake Off deal

The Great British Bake Off now airs on Channel 4 in the UK

BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) has unveiled its format slate for Mipcom later this month and has struck a series of deals with international broadcasters in advance of the market.

Sony Pictures Television Networks (SPTN) in Hungary will produce its own 10-part version of cookery format Bake Off (locally titled Ide Süss! – Az Ország Nagy Cukrászversenye) for Viasat3.

SPTN took rights to Lionsgate’s Kicking & Screaming format earlier this year,

The deal for Bake Off, originally produced by the UK’s Love Productions, takes the format to 26 local remake agreements.

Meanwhile, Brazilian free-to-air channel SBT will produce a 10-part version of Junior Bake Off as a companion series to Bake Off Brazil (Mao na Massa), claimed to be the highest-rated cooking show on Brazilian TV last year.

Elsewhere, Portuguese public broadcaster RTP is producing its own version of Sewing Bee for its flagship channel RTP1, with the show following amateurs as they get tested on their sewing and dressmaking skills.

BBCWW is preparing to launch seven new factual entertainment and entertainment formats to international buyers at Mipcom this year, alongside four scripted formats.

Among these, Astronauts: Toughest Job in the Universe is from BBC Studios and follows 12 ordinary people as they take on the most demanding selection process to prove they’ve got what it takes to become an astronaut, while Tuesday’s Child’s Pitch Battle is a contemporary choral primetime family format.

How to Stay Young aims to help people turn back the clock on ageing and is from BBC Studios, as is daytime quiz The Boss, which sees one contestant earning the right to pick questions for competitors. Also from BBC Studios, Meet the Humans explores human behaviour.

C21 revealed last month that BBCWW had restructured its formats operation by appointing two execs to create new investment partnerships and develop IP for broadcasters, streamers and social media services.
