BBCS Science Unit clinches Netflix first

MIPCOM: The UK’s BBC Studios (BBCS) Science Unit has received its first commission from streaming giant Netflix.

Netflix has commissioned an as-yet-unnamed 4×60’ documentary series about pioneering surgeons which will be available on the SVoD service from next year.

Viewers will see them at the operating table as well as talking through their specialist area, the surgery process and what motivated them to get into medicine.

BBCS Science Unit has previously made content for UKTV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 in the UK, and Stargazing for Australian pubcaster the ABC.

“This new series offers an intimate understanding into the minds of these trailblazing surgeons and the remarkable journeys that led to them becoming innovators within their fields,” said James van der Pool, showrunner for BBC Studios Science Unit.

BBCS announced the deal in Cannes today.
