BBCS prescribes Doctor Foster for India

MIPCOM: UK pubcaster BBC1’s thriller Doctor Foster is set to be remade in India following a deal between streamer Hotstar and distributor BBC Studios (BBCS).

The original Doctor Foster stars Suranne Jones

The SVoD service will adapt the format for its Hotstar Specials strand and launch the as-yet-untitled show later this year. Filmmakers Tigmanshu Dhulia and Aijza Khan will direct.

The UK version of Doctor Foster stars Suranne Jones as a hardworking general practitioner who begins to suspect her husband is having an affair. She investigates and unearths secrets about her husband and their life together.

Produced by Drama Republic and written by Mike Bartlett, it ran on BBC1 for two five-part seasons between 2015 and 2017.

The French adaptation of Doctor Foster, titled Infidèle (Unfaithful), is set to return for a second season. BBCS’s French production base will coproduce the new episodes with Storia Television for TF1.

Sumi Connock, creative director of formats at BBCSs, said: “Strong female-led dramas continue to capture the attention of our clients. Doctor Foster’s unique and brilliant portrayal of adultery and revenge has provided a complex psychological thriller within the genre, so I’m especially pleased that India will be getting their own local version and France will soon be treated to the next chapter of Infidèle.”
