BBC3 bags Guadagnino series

We Are Who We Are is a Sky and HBO coproduction

BBC3 in the UK has acquired HBO and Sky series We Are Who We Are, the first TV project from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino.

The 8×60’ series tells the story of two American kids who live on a US military base in Italy, exploring themes of friendship, first loves, identity and teen angst.

BBC3 has acquired the HBO/Sky copro from international distributor Fremantle, whose subsidiaries The Apartment and Wildside produce the show alongside Small Forward. Sky holds the rights to the show in Italy.

Guadagnino is the showrunner, exec producer, writer and director of the show, with Lorenzo Mieli exec producing for The Apartment and Mario Gianani for Wildside. Elena Recchia, Nick Hall, Sean Conway and Francesco Melzi d’Eril also serve as exec producers.

Jamie Lynn, exec VP and head of EMEA distribution at Fremantle, said: “As a longstanding fan of Luca Guadagnino’s work, it’s a joy to introduce his television debut to UK audiences with the BBC. The series is fast becoming one of the most anticipated shows of the year, exploring universal issues such as identity, culture, gender and diversity, making it the perfect addition to BBC3 and its young-adult audience.”
