BBC2 returns to Motherland

BBC2 in the UK has recommissioned Sharon Horgan comedy series Motherland for a third season ahead of its return for a second next week.

Delightful Industries and Merman’s Motherland

From Horgan’s Merman and Twofour Group-owned Delightful Industries, the series begins its second season on BBC2 on October 7 and explores the trials and traumas of juggling careers and childcare.

It is written by Horgan (Catastrophe, Divorce, Pulling), Holly Walsh (DeadBoss), Helen Linehan (Motherland) and Barunka O’Shaughnessy (Lethal, Timewasters).

US studio Lionsgate has worldwide distribution rights and has included the title on its Mipcom slate.

It stars Anna Maxwell Martin (Line of Duty), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Britain), Lucy Punch (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Paul Ready (Bodyguard), Philippa Dunne (Derry Girls) and Tanya Moodie (Enterprice).

Shane Allen, the BBC’s controller of comedy commissioning, said: “This is a show that will run for as long as the team are able to keep making it and is the easiest commissioning decision this side of renewing Coronation Street.”

Horgan said: “Making the second series of Motherland was even more therapeutic than the first. We gratefully accept Shane Allen’s offer of further treatment courtesy of the BBC.”

It was commissioned by Allen and Patrick Holland, controller, BBC2. The executive producers for Merman are Clelia Mountford and Horgan, with Richard Boden for Delightful and Walsh. The commissioning editor for the BBC is Alex Moody.
