BBC2 orders Brexit comedy special

Matt Berry in Toast of London

BBC2 in the UK has commissioned a satire from Toast of London creators Arthur Mathews and Matt Berry exploring Britain’s troubled relationship with Europe.

The Road to Brexit (1×30′) will be written by Toast scribe Mathews (Father Ted) and will star his long-time collaborator Berry (The IT Crowd), who also plays the lead role in Toast.

The one-off special is due to air this spring to mark the planned date of the UK’s departure from the European Union at the end of March.

Through creative use of archive footage and filmed interviews, the show will give viewers a unique take on the UK’s current situation, spanning the decades from the 1970s right up to the present day and the UK’s imminent divorce from Brussels.

It comes from Objective Fiction, part of Objective Media Group, and will be produced and directed by Hannah Mackay.

The Road to Brexit was commissioned by BBC2 controller Patrick Holland and BBC comedy commissioning controller Shane Allen. Ben Farrell, Objective Fiction’s chief creative officer, is executive producer and the commissioning editor for the BBC is Kate Daughton.
