BBC Studios gets first C5 orders

UK broadcaster Channel 5 has ordered shows from BBC Studios (BBCS) for the first time, commissioning two factual programmes from the science unit of the UK pubcaster’s commercial arm.

Why Do I Put On Weight? is a one-hour programme exploring the science behind weight gain. Drawing on the latest research, it will challenge the notion that weight gain is all down to eating too much and exercising too little, making the case for genetic, hormonal and psychological factors.

Why Can’t I Sleep? (working title) is a two-part series examining the UK’s “sleep crisis,” in which a team of sleep specialists will attempt to solve the problems of some of Britain’ worst sleepers, looking at issues including snoring and night terrors. It will also conduct an experiment to show the biological effects of sleep deprivation and explain how to get a restful night.

Paul Overton, executive producer for the BBCS science unit, said: “These shows will be packed with fascinating and relevant new specialist discoveries and applied to contributors’ lives to see if it can help them overcome their problems.”

Andrew Cohen, head of the science unit, added: “I hope they will help people understand the very latest science around common health issues like obesity and the sleep crisis and offer a real takeout for people to positively change their own lives.”

Both C5 commissions are being produced by the BBCS science unit in Glasgow and are due to air later this year.
