BBC revisits Rio Ferdinand in doc follow-up

Rio and Kate Ferdinand got married last year

UK pubcaster BBC1 has commissioned a documentary following up its Bafta-winning 2017 doc Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum & Dad.

Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum & Dad followed the life of the former England and Manchester United footballer as he cared for his three children after the death of his wife, and their mother, Rebecca in 2015.

Now, Rio & Kate: Becoming a Step Family (1×60’) will focus on Ferdinand and his new wife Kate as she takes on the role of stepmother.

Jonathan Smith is exec producing the doc, which comes from October Films. Matt Smith is the director and Molly Sayers is the producer.

“The positive response to Being Mum & Dad in 2017 and the way it helped others going through a similar situation was overwhelming,” Rio and Kate Ferdinand said in a joint statement.

“For that reason, we were both compelled to tell the next chapter in our lives together. We hope Becoming a Step Family will give a unique insight into step families and the journey through grief, whilst also providing an intimate look at our lives together.”
