BBC hands McGolpin new iPlayer role

The BBC’s former daytime controller has been appointed to a newly created role overseeing the pubcaster’s on-demand service iPlayer.

Dan McGolpin

Dan McGolpin takes up the position of iPlayer and programming controller immediately, reporting to director of content Charlotte Moore, and will work with BBC commissioners for programming that can sit within the on-demand service.

His remit includes overseeing iPlayer editorial teams as well as those for design, engineering, marketing and audiences. A separate controller of audio-focused BBC Sounds is also now being sought.

Former commissioning editor Carla-Maria Lawson will take on some of McGolpin’s daytime remit, after she was named acting head of daytime and early peak commissioning until the end of the year, when a daytime strategy will be laid out.

McGolpin joined the BBC in 2000 and was in his previous role for two years. His appointment comes after the BBC’s Annual Plan last month outlined a strategy to commission more programming for the VoD service and he is the first head of content for iPlayer since Victoria Jaye, who left in 2017.
