BBC and Channel 4 split channel honours

EDINBURGH NEWS: Channel 4 was named terrestrial channel of the year at the Edinburgh Television Festival last night while BBC4 bagged the non-terrestrial channel award.

At a ceremony hosted by C4 talent Russell Brand, Channel 4 was presented with the top gong and commended for both ratings and its creative successes for shows such as Big Brother, Deal or No Deal and its Bodyshock docs. All other terrestrial channels were nominated.

BBC4 was presented with the non-terrestrial channel of the year award. The Discovery Channel, E4, UKTV History and Sky One were also nominated.

The event also saw Sir David Attenborough named TV personality of the year and Doctor Who scribe Russell T Davies as industry player of the year. The Fast Track and TVYO Choice Award for programme of the year 2006 went to the BBC’s Planet Earth.

The awards were voted for by a panel that included BSkyB MD Dawn Airey, Thinkbox CEO Tess Alps, Endemol UK’s chief creative officer Tim Hincks and ITV director of daytime and factual Alison Sharman, this year’s festival chair.
