Barcroft moves into VR

UK factual producer and online specialist Barcroft Media is moving into virtual reality (VR) with content being produced for the Jaunt app and a partnership with award-winning British VR filmmaker Drew Gardner.

London-based Barcroft will co-develop and produce content exclusively with the Jaunt VR platform. The two firms aim to create immersive VR experiences available to download through the Jaunt VR app.

Companies including Sky, Disney and ProSiebenSat.1 invested more than US$65m in California-based virtual reality producer Jaunt in September last year.

Barcroft is also teaming with Gardner, an internationally acclaimed photographer and filmmaker, to deliver a series of shortform documentaries for its Barcroft TV service on Facebook and YouTube.

The first of Gardner’s films to feature on Barcroft TV is Child Climbs Historic Human Tower, which focuses on an attempt to build a 600-person human tower in a Catalan market square.

Barcroft Media CEO and founder Sam Barcroft said: “We’re excited to be taking Barcroft into the visceral world of immersive content and we couldn’t be working with a better partner than Jaunt, the leader in virtual reality technology, and a brilliant 360º filmmaker in Drew Gardner.

“Coupled with our unique brand of exclusive storytelling, this is how we are taking ‘the amazing side of life’ to the next level.”
