Bake Off’s Nadiya cooks up BBC show

Nadiya Hussain won The Great British Bake Off in 2015

The BBC has ordered factual shows fronted by The Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain and former footballer Alan Shearer, as well as a doc exploring the downfall of entertainer Bill Cosby.

Hussain will front Nadiya’s British Food Adventure (8×30′), which will air on BBC2 and see the presenter and chef travel the country to find and sample its best food.

Produced by BBC Studios, it was commissioned by BBC2 channel editor Patrick Holland and David Brindley, head of commissioning for popular factual and factual events.

Dementia – Football’s Silent Shame? (1×60′), meanwhile, follows recent scientific reports from around the world that have revealed a link between football and dementia as a result of brain damage caused by heading the ball.

Shearer, the former England international who retired 10 years ago, will front the documentary and explore the condition of his own body and brain after a long career at the game’s highest level.

The show will be produced by BBC Sport and was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, director of content, and Tom McDonald, head of commissioning for natural history and specialist factual.

Elsewhere, Cosby: Fall of an American Icon (1×60′) tells the story of how the stand-up comedian and actor came to face a criminal trial for sexual assault a decade after the accusations were made.

The doc, produced by Sugar Films, will feature interviewees including Richard Pryor’s widow Jennifer Lee Pryor, as well as accusers such as fellow The Cosby Show actor Lili Bernard and former actor and playboy bunny Victoria Valentino.

BBC2 has also ordered Special Ops: 1943 (5×60′), which will be made by Wall to Wall and will see a group of modern-day Britons attempt to recreate the work carried out by undercover agents during the Second World War.

Alison Kirkham, BBC controller of factual commissioning, said: “The new commissions I’m announcing today demonstrate the ongoing ambition of the factual commissioning team to showcase the very best talent on the BBC and to tell brave and important stories.”
