Baby Cow brings in MD from BBCS

Steve Coogan and Henry Normal’s Baby Cow Productions has appointed a senior BBC Studios (BBCS) executive as its new MD.

Sarah Monteith

Sarah Monteith has been appointed to the newly created role and will start in mid-May at the London-based firm.

Monteith has more than 20 years of industry experience and joins Baby Cow from BBCS, where she was serving as interim chief marketing officer.

She has held a number of leadership roles at the BBC and served as BBCS’s global director for brand and content marketing in 2018, having previously held the role of director for marketing strategy and operations.

The British exec joined the BBC in 2011 as the marketing and fundraising director for fundraiser BBC Children in Need.

Previously, Monteith founded the digital brand agency Brolly in 2004 and served a diverse client portfolio of new and established brands. She also worked at Sky as brand director after having started her career at Chrysalis Group.

Coogan, actor and creative director and founder of Baby Cow, said: “Baby Cow has been going through a period of transition and development, expanding into drama as well as building on our reputation for pioneering comedy shows. We are now at a stage where much of our slate is fighting fit and ready to go.

“I, along with Christine Langan and the wealth of talent we have nurtured, have been beavering away on a number of diverse, new films, comedies and TV dramas. Sarah Monteith’s appointment is a testament to BBC Studios’ faith in our prospects. She is exactly what the company needs to maximise the potential of the quality content that is the hallmark of Baby Cow.”

Earlier this year, UK broadcaster Channel 4 commissioned Baby Cow dramedy Chivalry, written by and starring Sarah Solemani and Coogan. Baby Cow will be back in production soon with BBC2 comedy series The Witchfinder, written and directed by Rob and Neil Gibbons and starring Daisy May Cooper and Tim Key.

The prodco’s previous TV credits include Gavin & Stacey, Alan Partridge, The Mighty Boosh, Camping, The Trip, Uncle and Red Dwarf, while its film output includes Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Stan & Ollie and the Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated Philomena.

BBC Studios became a shareholder in Baby Cow Productions in 2008 and has been its majority owner since 2016.
