Atresmedia orders Diagonal soap spin-off

Luimela centres on two characters from Love is Forever in the present day

Spain’s Atresmedia has commissioned a shortform spin-off series to soap opera Love is Forever for its SVoD platform Atresplayer Premium.

Luimela is a fiction format from Endemol Shine Group’s Spanish prodco Diagonal, part of Endemol Shine Iberia, and will launch as six shortform episodes of eight to 10 minutes each.

It acts as a spin-off to Diagonal’s daily soap Love is Forever, which airs on Antena 3, and follows two of the soap’s characters, Luisita and Amelia.

In Love is Forever, Luisita and Amelia are a gay couple living in 1977, but in Luimela they live in the modern day. The spin-off will see how life for the couple differs in 2020 compared with in the 70s.

Jordi Frades, creative producer and content director at Diagonal TV, said: “Love is Forever is the first and original soap in Spain and the characters have captured the hearts of the audience here.

“Producing this shortform series for Atresmedia’s SVoD platform Atresplayer Premium allows us to further develop the characters and see how they would have progressed if living in 2020. This spin-off series allows us to not only highlight LGBTQ visibility and feminism but also the way social media affects relationships in this day and age.”
