Matthew Berkowitz has been tapped as head of development at the Vancouver-based firm and will develop the studio’s IP and coproduction slate out of LA.

Berkowitz had spent the past seven years at Arc, which filed for bankruptcy in August and was subsequently acquired by Boat Rocker Media’s Canadian animation outfit Jam Filled Entertainment.

During his time at the studio, he oversaw its IP slate and established animation production relationships with the likes of Sony Animation, DreamWorks Animation, Amazon Studios, Lego, Zodiak and Sprout. Prior to Arc, Berkowitz held positions at Film Roman and Strike Entertainment.

Earlier this year Atomic Cartoons in Canada promoted head of production Jennifer Twiner-McCarron to the role of president.

Atomic Cartoons was founded in 1999 and has provided services for clients such as Nelvana, Marvel Animation, Entertainment One, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, as well as developing original productions.

It recently coproduced Netflix’s original animated series Beat Bugs alongside Grace: A Storytelling Company and Beyond Screen Production in Australia.

Thunderbird also has an exclusive first-look deal with Skybound North, the fledgling Canada division of The Walking Dead producer Skybound Entertainment, for all animated and non-animated properties being developed for television by the new outfit in Canada.
