A US broadcast group has acquired the rights to Welsh crime noir drama Hinterland from distributor All3Media International.

Non-profit syndicator American Public Television (APT) will air the first 4×120’ run of the detective thriller, which is set in rural Wales.

APT will release the programme in 13 US markets, including Kansas City, Seattle, Oregon, Milwaukee, Buffalo NY and Boston, on June 30.

Hinterland is produced by Fiction Factory and financed by broadcast partners S4C and BBC Wales, together with All3Media International, the S4C Coproduction Fund and Welsh Business Finance.

Producers shot the first two seasons of the show back-to-back in Welsh and English.

The drama, known as Y Gwyll in Wales, was broadcast first on Welsh-language public broadcaster S4C before a bilingual version rolled out on BBC1 Wales. A third 4×120’ season is currently in production.

Netflix has already acquired the show for the US and the rest of the world while other acquisitions have come from ARD (Germany), KRO (Netherlands), NRK (Norway), YLE (Finland), VRT (Belgium), RTV (Slovenia), Dizale (France) and DR (Denmark).

APT also holds the rights to All3Media International’s UK crime drama Midsomer Murders, which airs in more than 25 markets.
