Apple teams with Aniston, Witherspoon

Apple has made its latest foray into scripted series by giving a two-season order to a drama executive produced by and starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

The tech giant has picked up the as-yet-untitled project, which is set inside the world of early-morning US network TV shows and is based on an original idea by Michael Ellenberg.

It marks a return to TV for Aniston after Friends wrapped in 2004, and comes after Witherspoon starred in HBO drama Big Little Lies.

The show will be produced by Ellenberg’s Media Res alongside Aniston’s Echo Films and Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine produco.

Apple has also confirmed it has ordered a 10-part reboot of science-fiction series Amazing Stories from Steven Spielberg. The project, originally mooted earlier this year, comes after Apple first dipped its toe into exclusive programming with unscripted shows Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke.

Former Sony Pictures Television presidents Jamie Erlicht and Zach Van Amburg arrived in June to lead the firm’s programming push.

The tech giant unveiled a US$1bn programming war chest in August and appointed Matt Cherniss, former president and general manager of WGN America and Tribune Studios, to expand its fledgling video division.

Since then, it has hired the outgoing chief creative officer at UK broadcaster Channel 4, Jay Hunt, as creative director of Europe at its Worldwide Video division.

Former Amazon exec Morgan Wandell has also joined as head of international productions.
