Angry Birds TV series coming by fall

MIPTV: An animated series based on Angry Birds will be available on all platforms before the autumn, the game franchise’s producer Rovio has announced.

A series of 52 episodes will be produced by the Finnish company’s in-house studio, each between two and three minutes long. The non-dialogue toons will be released weekly and will focus on the characters featured in the hugely popular game.

“In the future, Angry Birds will be less about gameplay and more about the characters and their adventures in other formats. We want to be on all screens,” said Rovio head of animation Nick Dorra here in Cannes.

Delegates at MipTV were shown a 90-second clip of the animation, in which the birds were transported into space. The latest cosmic version of the game released last month clocked up 20 million downloads in just one week. Rovio is currently in talks regarding partnerships for the series.

During the session, Dorra also spoke about ways to tackle piracy in the entertainment industry. “There is a change coming, whether people like it or not, where content will start to be released around the world at the same time.”

The Espoo-based company is hoping to become a global media entertainment brand and Dorra reiterated the ambition that Disney was a company Rovio would like to emulate in terms of content diversification. Rovio is already in talks about opening up a theme park in the UK.

Dorra stated that Rovio will be releasing completely new IP later this year, but cooled talks of an Angry Birds feature film, saying: “It’s in development but won’t be out in 2013 or 2014.”

The firm hired former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel last summer to help with its push into general entertainment having bought out Finnish toon house Kombo after closing a US$42m funding round in March. C21 broke the news of the development of an Angry Birds TV series back in January last year.
