Amblin, Jigsaw investigate Afghan war

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions have teamed up to develop both a drama series and an unscripted docuseries based on The Washington Post’s investigation into the war in Afghanistan.

Amblin has acquired the rights to the Washington Post report titled At War With the Truth, which details the secret history of the US involvement in the Afghan War.

Both Amblin and Jigsaw will work with The Washington Post to access the recordings, files and research materials from the investigation and will collaborate with investigative journalist Craig Whitlock, who first broke the story.

The projects will be executive produced by Gibney alongside Jigsaw’s Stacey Offman and Richard Perello, as well as Amblin co-presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.

No streaming platform or broadcaster is currently attached to the projects.

Jigsaw, Amblin and Gibney recently collaborated on the Discovery docuseries Why We Hate, which aired last year, and on Epix’s upcoming music documentary Laurel Canyon.

Gibney said: “This is a vital story at a critical moment. For once we will hear an honest, intimate account from insiders of the epic tale of the forever war: politicians regale us with victory speeches while day by day casualties mount and the battle for hearts and minds are lost. Why? Because no one bothered to wonder why we are there.”
