Amazon kicks off football doc series

Amazon has picked up a six-part documentary series about the global appeal of football for its Prime Video service.

This Is Football launches on Prime worldwide on August 2

This Is Football (6×60’) explores how the sport is able to grip and unify billions of people around the world, with each episode focused on a different theme: redemption, belief, chance, love, pride and wonder.

The series is being produced by UK indie October Films, Spanish film and television production house Brutal Media and Starbucks – the first time the global coffee chain has been involved itself in content production.

The series will launch exclusively on Prime Video in 200 territories on August 2, the eve of the new football season in the UK.

Award-winning foreign correspondent and sports author John Carlin (Invictus) wrote and co-created the series based on an original idea by him and Raimon Masllorens.

The films are directed by a team led by creative director James Erskine (Le Mans: Racing is Everything) and series executive producer Jos Cushing (Walking The Americas). Joe Roth is also attached as an exec producer.

It joins Prime Video’s growing stable of sports documentary series and live sports, including All Or Nothing: Manchester City; forthcoming live and exclusive Premier League football matches, US Open Tennis and ATP World Tour Tennis events in the UK; and NFL games.

Amazon also announced today that the finalists in the Kindle global literary awards – recognising outstanding work by independent authors and including the UK Kindle Storyteller Award – will have the chance to see their work made into an audiovisual production with Amazon Studios for Prime Video.

The finalists and winning titles from all six Kindle literary awards around the world will be evaluated by a panel of audiovisual experts from Amazon International Originals, and one book will be selected for an option based on criteria such as creativity, originality and boldness of storytelling.

The winner, announced online in March 2020, will be given the chance to sign an option contract for a production along with an advance payment of US$10,000. The option contract is an agreement for an exclusive, 36-month period for Amazon Studios to purchase the screenplay of their work.
