A+E takes control in Asia

A+E Networks is to assume full ownership of its Asian venture as it prepares to launch new channels, including Lifetime, in the region.

A+E is taking over Singapore-based AETN All Asia Networks by buying out its original joint venture partner Astro Overseas Limited.

The two companies launched the business in 2007 and it now runs History, Bio and Crime & Investigation to 16 territories including Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand.

In a statement A+E said the move comes as it looks to “expand its footprint and launch new brands, including Lifetime.”

Astro and A+E will continue to work together in Asia, establishing a regional production partnership to nurture the local industry and create locally produced hits.

Michelle Schofield, senior VP programming and marketing at AETN All Asia Networks, recently told C21 the company was aiming to start producing Asian equivalents of its hit character-led series like Pawn Stars in the near future.

Astro Malaysia will continue to carry A+E’s History, Crime & Investigation Network and Bio in Malaysia and Brunei.

AETN All Asia Networks’ management team will now report to Alan Hodges, MD Asia-Pacific for A+E Networks.

Sean Cohan, executive VP of international for A+E Networks said: “We view Asia as critically important for our international growth, and assuming full ownership of AETN All Asia Networks is a big step. This new structure will allow us to expand our brand portfolio and grow distribution throughout the region.”

The deal should be included early in 2013.
