A+E, Sky extend UK partnership

History has invested in shows including Damian Lewis: Spy Wars

European satcaster Sky and A+E Networks UK have strengthened their partnership with the launch of a joint History channel.

A+E Networks UK’s existing History network will now be called Sky History from spring 2020. It follows a successful 2019 for the channel with its audience share up 11% thanks to long-running franchises like Curse of Oak Island and new series UnXplained with William Shatner.

There has also been greater investment in local commissions such as Damian Lewis: Spy Wars, James Nesbitt: Disasters That Changed Britain and Al Murray: Why Does Everyone Hate the English.

The deeper partnership with Sky will see further investment in local commissions in 2020 and beyond, the companies said today.

It will be part of the A+E Networks UK family of channels, which includes Crime + Investigation, Sky History2 (fka History2), Lifetime and free-to-air channel Blaze. All networks will continue to be broadcast on Sky, Virgin Media, BT and TalkTalk.

Sky History will continue to be managed and operated by the A+E Networks UK team from its offices in Hammersmith, London.

A+E Networks UK is a joint venture between Sky and Hearst.

The move follows January’s news that Sky is preparing to launch two more dedicated factual channels – Sky Documentaries and Sky Nature – to join Sky Crime, which went live in October last year. Sky Comedy also made its debut at the turn of the year.
