Acorn TV finds A Suitable Boy

A Suitable Boy

AMC Networks-owned US streaming service Acorn TV has picked up the North American premiere rights to BBC period drama A Suitable Boy.

Acorn TV will offer the drama exclusively in the US and Canada from December 7 in a deal with London-based Lookout Point (War & Peace, Les Misérables, Gentleman Jack), which produced the series along with parent company BBC Studios.

A Suitable Boy was adapted by Andrew Davies (Pride & Prejudice, War & Peace) from Vikram Seth’s 1993 novel. Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake) is the director.

It tells the story of a spirited university student as she comes of age in India in 1951, at the same time the country is carving out its own identity as an independent nation and is about to go to the polls for its first democratic general election.

The six-parter was shot entirely on location in India with a cast including Bollywood actor Ishaan Khatter (Beyond the Clouds), Tabu (The Namesake, Life of Pi) and rising star Tanya Maniktala in the central role.

Its exec producers include Faith Penhale, Laura Lankester and Will Johnston for Lookout Point; Mona Qureshi and Ayela Butt for the BBC; and Lydia Dean Pilcher and Aradhana Seth. BBC Studios is distributing internationally.

Netflix earlier picked up the drama for its feeds around the world apart from the US, Canada and China.
