ABC sings along to Selena drama

Us network ABC is developing a scripted series inspired by the musical legacy of singer Selena Quintanilla, penned by a writer of its hit drama Scandal.

Selena Quintanilla was shot dead in 1995

The as-yet-untitled family drama, to which Scandal’s Miguel Nolla is attached to write and co-executive produce, has been given a put pilot commitment by ABC. It is being developed by ABC Studios with talent manager Scooter Braun’s SB Projects and LA-based Campanario Entertainment.

The series focuses on a chart-topping, award-winning pop star whose music and career is inspired by Quintanilla and who has been estranged from her family for five years.

When a crisis forces her to return home, she finds herself back in Texas, juggling a love triangle, the demands of her career and the dark secrets of the family that she now desperately wants to win back.

Braun, Scott Manson and James Shin of SB Projects also executive produce along with Sergio Aguero, Jaime Davila and Rico Martinez of Campanario Entertainment.

Simran A Singh brokered the deal with ABC on behalf of the Quintanilla family, with Singh and Quintanilla family members Abraham Quintanilla Jr and Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga joining the project as producers.

“This project gives us all an opportunity to showcase a successful, aspirational Latino family in a way that is not currently represented on television,” said Davila, president of Campanario Entertainment.

Campanario was co-founded by Davila, former development executive at Bravo, and Jaime Davila Sr., former Televisa chief operating officer and Univision president and chairman.

Quintanilla, dubbed the ‘Queen of Tejano music,’ was murdered in 1995 aged 23 by the president of her fan club. She has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide and was the subject of the 1997 film Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez in the lead role.
