ABC orders Kaldor doc

Christo and Jeanne Claude’s Wrapped Coast

Australian pubcaster the ABC has commissioned a feature doc that profiles a prominent arts patron, collector and philanthropist.

Felix Media will produce Kaldor Public Art Projects (working title), also supported by Screen Australia, state agency Create NSW and the Asia Film Investment Group.

Directed by Samantha Lang and produced by Felix Media’s John Maynard, the film will examine John Kaldor’s profound influence on the contemporary Australian art scene.

In five decades he has funded 33 projects, including Christo and Jeanne Claude’s Wrapped Coast and works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Jeff Koons and Jonathan Jones.

It is the third film backed by the Create NSW and ABC Arts documentary feature fund following Kriv Stenders’ The Go-Betweens: Right Here and Olivia Martin-McGuire’s China Love.

Create NSW contributes A$100,000 (US$71,000) to each production and the ABC allocates an A$150,000 licence fee. Each film receives a world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival prior to the ABC telecast.

ABC manager of arts Richard Buckham said: “The ABC is excited to be sharing this unique story of John Kaldor’s contribution to Australian arts. His support of the arts is closely aligned to the ABC’s dedication to content that strengthens and celebrates Australian identity, character and cultural diversity.”
