ABC fires up live-action Jetsons

The Jetsons first aired in 1962

ABC in the US is preparing a live-action reboot of 1960s Hanna-Barbera animation The Jetsons and has tapped Back to the Future’s Robert Zemeckis to exec produce.

The multi-camera show has been ordered to pilot by the Alphabet network, with Gary Janetti (Vicious, Family Guy) writing. Warner Bros is producing.

The programme, which will be based on the characters from the original show and is set 100 years in the future, is being exec produced by Janetti, Zemeckis and Jack Rapke.

Despite holding cult status, The Jetsons only aired for 75 episodes over three seasons. It initially ran for one season on ABC in 1962, before being repeated in later years on CBS and NBC. The show was subsequently revived in 1985 for syndication, where it survived for two further seasons.

A 1990 movie was also produced and earlier this year another film, The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!, was released direct to video.

ABC, which recently lost producer Shonda Rhimes to Netflix, revived another of its classic sitcoms, Roseanne, last season.
