ABC Family orders drama pilots

US cable net ABC Family has ordered three new drama pilots and extended the runs of two of its comedy shows.

Alice in Arabia has been written by Brooke Eikmeier and follows a rebellious American teenage girl who is kidnapped by her extended family and must find a way to escape.

Recovery Road is being exec produced by Pilgrim Studios’ Beth Miller (12 Dates of Christmas) and Craig Piligian (Survivor, American Chopper) and is based on the young adult novel of the same name by Blake Nelson, which focuses on a teenage girl dealing with addiction. The pilot has been written by Bert V Royal (Easy A) and Karen DiConcetto (Ruby & The Rockits).

Unstrung takes viewers behind the scenes of professional tennis and follows two siblings on the world tour who must deal with their emotions as they move up the ranks. It is being exec produced by Emily Whitesell (Life Unexpected).

Kate Juergens, ABC Family’s chief creative officer and exec VP of original content, said the pilots would deliver “emotional and entertaining storylines, intriguing, multi-faceted characters and complex relationships.”

Meanwhile the network has also ordered fourth seasons of comedy duo Melissa & Joey, which will take the show to over 100 episodes, and Baby Daddy, which follows five adults at various stages of growing up.
