ABC beefs up educational block

ABC TV in Australia is to introduce a two-hour programming block when it moves all its children’s educational content from ABC1 to ABC3 next month.

A range of learning programmes will air weekdays from 10.00 to noon on dedicated children’s channel ABC3 during school terms, beginning July 21. Currently, a one-hour ABC TV Education block airs in the mornings on ABC1.

The new ABC TV Education block will “offer inspiring programming, respond to a broad and diverse curriculum and showcase the best learning content available,” said ABC TV.

“The expanded timeslots on ABC3 allow us to offer more content for both primary and secondary students in multiple subject areas. We will provide dynamic, award-winning programming that encourages curiosity, bringing learning into our lives beyond the classroom,” said Deirdre Brennan, ABC TV’s head of children’s television.

ABC TV revealed its plans to drop children’s programming from its flagship channel ABC1 and move it to dedicated children’s channels earlier this year.
