16 & Pregnant returns to MTV

ViacomCBS-owned youth-skewing cablenet MTV is bringing back teen pregnancy format 16 & Pregnant as a docuseries.

Originally airing on MTV from 2009 until 2014, 16 & Pregnant followed the stories of pregnant teenage girls in high school.

The relaunched version will take the format of a docuseries by following the pregnancy journeys from multiple perspectives, not just that of the expectant mothers.

Exec producing are Benjamin Murvitz, Jessica Zalkind and Nadim Amiry for MTV, Morgan J Freeman and Dia Sokol Savage for Anxious Eleven, and Larry Musnik.

The six-episode series will premiere on MTV in October and comes after the cablenet’s launch earlier this month of 16 & Recovering, a four-part docuseries following the lives of students attending a high school dedicated to teen drug addicts as they overcome their addictions.

Nina L Diaz, president and chief creative content officer at ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, said: “More than a decade after 16 & Pregnant played a significant role in bringing the teen pregnancy rate down to record lows, we are sharing the stories of a new generation of young parents and underscoring the impact of an unplanned pregnancy on families – beyond the mums- and dads-to-be – by showing authentic and intimate moments with siblings- and grandparents-to-be addressing the life change.”
