Zodiak, Scott Free see more life in a Day

Zodiak Media and Scott Free Films will work together to develop further versions of the latter’s ground-breaking crowd-sourced YouTube documentary, Life In a Day.

Japan In a Day

Zodiak’s distribution arm, Zodiak Rights, will seek production and broadcast partners for new ‘In a Day’ documentaries at Mipcom in Cannes next month.

The original 95-minute feature-length doc, directed by Kevin Macdonald and exec produced by Sir Ridley Scott, was put together from 4,500 hours of video clips uploaded from YouTube users all around the world on one day – July 24, 2010.

That film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 and Macdonald and Scott subsequently teamed up on a 1×90’ British version, made for BBC2, which aired it ahead of the London Olympics.

A Japanese version is currently in the works for Fuji TV, focusing on people’s lives in the wake of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that struck the country 18 months ago.

Japan In a Day will premiere in Japan in March 2013, to commemorate the second anniversary of the earthquake.

As well as looking to develop further national versions (Zodiak says it’s already head interest from Ireland, Brazil, India and Australia), the distributor will be selling the finished British version in Cannes. Distribution rights to the original Life In a Day reside with Hanway Films.
