ZDFE, Beta confirm scripted JV

ZDF Enterprises (ZDFE) and Beta Film in Germany have recruited an exec producer on Game of Thrones to lead their fledgling international scripted joint venture.

Frank Doelger

Frank Doelger will head Intaglio Films, which will be based in Berlin and develop, finance and produce drama for the international market.

C21 first reported on the potential venture between the two companies in September last year.

Doelger, who has been an executive producer on HBO’s Game of Thrones since 2012, will spearhead the company’s development and production slate, acting as bureau chief.

The company will focus on English-language scripted projects out of Germany, aimed at both the national and global markets, with ZDFE and Beta advising the company on international coproductions and distribution.

Moritz von Kruedener, MD of Babylon Berlin producer/distributor Beta, and Robert Franke, VP of the commercial arm of German public broadcaster ZDF’s drama unit, will manage the venture’s business affairs.

“Of all the opportunities presented to me upon completion of Game of Thrones, the new joint venture proposed by Beta Film and ZDFE was by far the most interesting and creatively challenging,” said Doelger.

“Backed by the formidable resources of Beta and ZDFE, and their shared vision for Intaglio, I am looking forward to continuing to work with the established creative community, as well as emerging talent, on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The move comes after Beta last month announced plans to form a TV production subsidiary with Austria’s Red Bull.
